With the holidays over and football season (and all the alcohol and junk food that goes with it) behind us, it’s time to get serious about your health (if you haven’t already). This is a great time of year to get back on track if you’ve made New Years resolutions and sorta gave up on them. Starting today will give you a great head start for the Spring (and on the rest of your life).

I have mixed feelings about New Year's resolutions. Every year at about this time all you see, hear and read about are people making the big three New Year resolutions: more money, quit smoking, and to lose weight.
Bring it on...the high-calorie food and drinks, that is!
Is that how you've approached this magical time of year? You're not alone. Most people lose sight of their fitness and fat loss goals entirely this month, only to have a rude awakening when their clothes are snug come January. Want to avoid the rude awakening? Read on... The holidays have arrived.
That means lights are up in my neighborhood, decorations are up at work and there's a half empty Christmas tree box in my living room. That also means that we're at the time of year where most people gain 5 to 10 pounds over the few weeks. With all the parties, special meals and edible gifts, weight gain is pretty much inevitable...right? ![]() Photo via VisualHunt What you eat before and after exercise has a huge impact on your results. This is especially true as you get older. Think about that. You could be doing intense workouts, pushing yourself hard in the gym, but then eating all the wrong foods that impede your progress and keep your body looking the same. The New Year isn't too far away but why wait to get what you really want? What if today was January 1st?
What if today you had a clean slate with a brand new year spread out in front of you, filled with endless possibilities. Everyone loves a good snack. But what defines "good"?
If your stomach starts rumbling and lunch is still two hours away, you might need a snack to make it through the day. First trying drinking a couple of glasses of water. If you're still hungry 30 minutes later, by all means reach for a small snack... As a personal trainer and nutrition coach, the number one question I get from potential clients is "Can you help me flatten my tummy?" And although bathing suit season is over for most of us I still heard this three times last week. And while I commend your desire to slim down before baring it all, I'm here to warn you that you shouldn't waste your time on any of the following myths:
How much thought do you put into what you eat?
We've all heard the "Diet is (pick one: 70-80-90) percent of the fat loss equation." Regardless of what the "right" percentage is, it's true that what you eat plays a significant role in your fat loss results. For most people reckless snacking derails their healthy diet, leaving them frustrated and overweight.
Do you eat a healthy lunch only to succumb to the vending machine an hour later? I've got good news for you, if you do. |
